Ensuring that recovery from childhood trauma becomes available for all children and young people

Launched in 2012, we are a membership charity which provides a ‘community of practice’ for promoting a collaboration between individuals and organisations who share a passion to radically change the lives of children and young people who have suffered developmental trauma.

Our mission is to ensure that recovery from childhood trauma becomes available for all children and young people. We seek to draw together information about childhood trauma and publicise it in a bid to influence policy and improve practice in this area.

APPG for Childhood Trauma 11th March 2024

The All Party Parliamentary Group for Childhood Trauma meeting was held in Portcullis House and over zoom with a focus on education policy and practice.

Julie Harmieson from Trauma Informed Schools delivered a presentation entitled “What’s Needed in Education Policy and Practice to Prevent Childhood Trauma and Promote Recovery?” available to download here. This was followed by a wide ranging discussion with  representatives from education, the voluntary sector, academia, London’s Violence Reduction Unit, the Excluded Lives Project, and the Attachment Research Community.

There is real concern that current education policy and practice is contributing to the increase in school exclusions, particularly for children who have experienced trauma, as well as increasing emotional and mental health problems and emotionally based school avoidance. Damian Hinds, Minister of State for Schools, has agreed to a meeting and this is currently being arranged.
